The Toyota Crown in this project was running its factory D4S Xenon headlights. Like many older Xenon setups, the bulbs had lost some of their original output over time, reducing the amount of usable light on the road at night.
We upgraded the Crown from the factory D4S Xenon bulbs to NaoEvo D4 Plus LED bulbs and carried out a ballast bypass conversion as part of the installation.
The finished setup gives the Crown a much stronger and more focused beam, with over 150 metres of low-beam reach and more than 300 metres on high beam.
From Factory D4S Xenon to NaoEvo D4 Plus LED
The original lighting system used D4S Xenon bulbs. Rather than replacing the entire headlight assembly, we replaced the ageing Xenon bulbs with NaoEvo D4 Plus LEDs. The D4 Plus is designed for vehicles using D4S applications, making it a direct option for this type of factory Xenon setup.
We also bypassed the original Xenon ballasts so the new LED bulbs could operate without the ageing Xenon control units.
Ballast Bypass Conversion
The factory Xenon system uses ballasts to start and control the Xenon bulbs. Since the Crown was being converted from Xenon to LED, we removed the ballast from the lighting circuit as part of the installation. We completed the bypass, connected the NaoEvo D4 Plus LEDs and then tested the lighting system to make sure everything was working correctly.
This also gives the new LED setup a simpler electrical connection than the original Xenon arrangement.
The Finished Lighting Performance
After the installation, we checked the beam pattern and lighting distance from the upgraded headlights.
Over 150 Metres on Low Beam
The upgraded low beam reaches over 150 metres.
The beam is focused on the road ahead, giving the driver more usable light further down the road while maintaining the headlight's intended beam pattern.
More Than 300 Metres on High Beam
On high beam, the upgraded setup reaches more than 300 metres.
The extra reach is particularly useful on dark and poorly lit roads where there is little or no street lighting ahead.
Beam Alignment and Final Testing
After installing the LEDs and completing the ballast bypass, we aligned the headlights and checked the finished beam pattern. We also tested the electrical connection and the operation of both low and high beam before completing the job.
Getting the installation and alignment right is important. A brighter bulb alone does not guarantee a good headlight. The light needs to be properly focused so that more of it reaches the road rather than being scattered where it is not useful.
The Final Setup
This upgrade gave the Crown a significant improvement over its ageing factory Xenon bulbs without replacing the complete headlight assembly.
If your Toyota Crown is still running factory D4S Xenon headlights and the light output has dropped over time, we can check the existing setup and recommend the appropriate NaoEvo upgrade.
