We recently worked on a Mercedes-Benz W221 that was still running its factory D1S HID low beams and H11 halogen high beams. We replaced both with NaoEvo LED bulbs, giving the car a more modern lighting setup without changing the original headlight assemblies.
The upgrade consisted of:
- D1S HID low beam → NaoEvo D1Plus LED
- H11 halogen high beam → NaoEvo H7 180W LED
D1S HID to NaoEvo D1Plus
The W221's low beams were fitted with factory D1S HID bulbs. We replaced them with NaoEvo D1Plus LEDs.
The D1Plus produces a cleaner, stronger beam that makes better use of the W221's existing projector setup. After installation and beam alignment, the low beam reached over 150 metres on the road.
This gives the driver a clearer view of the road ahead without having to rely on the high beams during normal night driving.
H11 to NaoEvo H7 180W
The original high beams were H11 halogen bulbs. For the high beam, we fitted NaoEvo H7 180W LEDs.
The difference is most noticeable on darker and open roads, where the extra output extends the illuminated area much further ahead. The finished high beam reached over 300 metres.
The H7 setup also gives the front of the W221 a cleaner, brighter appearance when the high beams are switched on.
The Final Setup
Once both applications were completed, the W221 was running NaoEvo LEDs across its main headlight functions:
Low beam: NaoEvo D1Plus (over 150 metres)
High beam: NaoEvo H7 180W (over 300 metres)
The original headlight assemblies were retained, with the upgrade focused on replacing the ageing HID and halogen bulbs with higher-output LED units.
