The Mazda CX-5 we worked on had water damage inside the factory LED headlights. Instead of replacing the complete headlight assemblies, we opened the existing headlights and replaced the damaged factory lighting with 90W Triple Cup Reflector Bi-LED Projectors.
This allowed us to keep the original headlight housings while upgrading the lighting system inside them.
The Factory Headlight Problem
The factory LED headlights had been affected by water damage. Once moisture gets inside a headlight, it can affect the lighting components and reduce their performance.
Rather than replacing the entire headlight assembly, we used the existing housings for a projector retrofit.
90W Triple Cup Reflector Bi-LED Projector Retrofit
We installed 90W Triple Cup Reflector Bi-LED Projectors into the original Mazda CX-5 headlights.
The projectors provide both low beam and high beam from the same projector system. After completing the retrofit, we checked the operation and beam pattern of the headlights and aligned them correctly.
The original headlight appearance was also retained because the upgrade was carried out inside the existing assemblies.
Beam Performance
On this CX-5, the upgraded projectors produced a low beam reaching over 300 metres and a high beam reaching more than 500 metres.
The low beam has a defined cutoff and a wide spread across the road. We checked the beam pattern after installation to make sure the light was correctly positioned.
The high beam provides the additional distance needed when the road ahead is clear and high beam can be used.
Why We Retrofitted the Existing Headlights
The main reason for choosing a projector retrofit was the condition of the original headlights. The factory LED system had been damaged by water, but the complete headlight housings could still be used.
By retrofitting the headlights, we were able to replace the damaged lighting components without changing the complete factory assemblies.
The result is a working Bi-LED projector setup while keeping the original CX-5 headlight housings.
Final Setup
The completed Mazda CX-5 lighting system uses:
- 90W Triple Cup Reflector Bi-LED Projectors
- Low beam: over 300 metres
- High beam: over 500 metres
- Original Mazda CX-5 headlight housings retained
- 2-year warranty
We completed the retrofit, checked the beam pattern and alignment, and tested the headlights before handing the vehicle back to the owner.
