This BMW 5 Series came in for a headlight upgrade using Bi-LED projectors. Instead of replacing the complete headlight assembly, the projectors were fitted into the factory dummy optical housing.
This kept the original headlight design intact while replacing the existing optical setup with a Bi-LED projector system.
Bi-LED Projectors in the Factory Housing
The main part of this upgrade was fitting the Bi-LED projectors into the BMW's factory dummy optical housing. This approach keeps the retrofit integrated into the original headlight assembly rather than adding separate external lights. Once installed, the projectors sit within the existing headlight design, so the finished headlights retain the BMW's original appearance.
The retrofit also provides both low beam and high beam from the Bi-LED projector system.
Low Beam and High Beam
Bi-LED projectors use a dedicated optical system to control how light is distributed onto the road.
The low beam provides the main forward illumination for normal night driving, while the high beam uses the projector's high-beam function when additional distance is required and road conditions allow it.
Beam alignment is an important part of the installation. The projector needs to be positioned correctly within the headlight so that the finished beam pattern is properly directed.
Why Use a Bi-LED Projector Retrofit?
A projector retrofit can be useful when the existing headlight housing has suitable space for an integrated projector installation.
For this BMW 5 Series, the main advantage of the retrofit is that the lighting hardware can be upgraded without changing the overall appearance of the headlight assembly.
The Bi-LED projector provides:
- Low and high beam functionality
- A defined projector beam pattern
- Controlled light distribution
- Integrated installation within the factory headlight
- A cleaner alternative to adding separate external lighting
The exact lighting performance will depend on the projector used, its installation position, beam alignment and the condition of the headlight assembly.
